Today marks another chapter in my life, albeit a short one. 8 months to be exact. This is probably my shortest career stint in any company. Yes I have resigned from Nestle and I have rejoined Nielsen. Purely for family reasons. Nothing to do with Nestle being a lousy company nor Nielsen doubling my pay to go back. Felt kind of sad on my way home. Anyway, life got to go on. After all, my family has a higher priority now.

I went to Ikano Power Centre to continue my search for John's theme day. I went into Hytex hoping to find something which John could wear on Friday. Unfortunately he didn't want to become a rabbit (Bugs Bunny) or a mouse (Mickey) either.

Hazel, thanks for the tip but renting a costume for a theme day is just way too expensive.

In the end, I bought a Pirate Mickey Mouse shirt. It may not resemble any animal but at least it is a new t-shirt.

On my way to the parking lot, I saw a shop selling party stuff. Thank goodness. I found a zebra visor. However, John insisted in an animal costume. Oh well, you just can't please them all the time I suppose.

Tuesday & Wednesday

Yesterday was a church night and my mother in law graciously took care of John for the night. My mother in law is going to take care of John while my wife is away. So I have to tend to Dan only. Since it was a church night, I went straight to bed when I reached home.

Today, I took everyone to One Utama for some shopping. John's kindy is having an animals theme day this Friday and John wanted a shirt with zebra. I couldn't find any such shirt. I will continue to search tomorrow night.

I also wanted to print 2 photos. I was looking for the Kodak Picture Kiosk where I can just print 2 photos from my flash disk. Similarly my search was in vain. Do you know the availability of such kiosk? I think there is one in Mid Valley.

Tom and Jerry is going to end soon. Time to put Dan to sleep. Good night.

Prague

Prague is the capital of Czech Republic. The climate is mild continental and the currency is Czech Crown. This is all the information I have found out on Prague.

Suzanne is travelling to Prague on a business trip tonight. This means I have to tend to John and Dan for 4 nights. Matthew will sleep with my maid, Rose.

John and Dan were cutting paper with the scissors earlier. They are playing with magic colours now.

Full Circle

The Firefly saga has come to a full circle, or so it seems. Here is the string of events that occurred since Firefly's inaugural flight:

1. FAX has offered to return all rural services to Firefly, a subsidiary of MAS
2. The government asked FAX to submit a written plan
3. MAS also wants to study the said written plan
4. The government has asked Firefly to take over FAX operations
5. MAS is hinting at a new outfit for the rural air services

wants to focus on making money and not bogged down by performing a national service duty. On the other hand, MAS is a I guess all these decisions seem logical and it is a win-win for both MAS and AirAsia. AirAsiaGLC and it cannot avoid this duty. MAS is also making progress on its business turnaround plan and the launch of Firefly basically seals the deal.

Personally speaking, I am looking forward to a more integrated flight route in Sabah and Sarawak. The flight convenience has been impacted ever since FAX took over the RAS in East Malaysia. Hopefully, the service will be back to "normal" soon.

Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD)

The Hand Foot Mouth Disease is back. It has struck John's kindy this time around. There was an earlier notice warning the parents when 2 kids were diagnosed with HFMD. Unfortunately, it spread to 9 children now. As a result, John's kindy has to be closed as advised by Jabatan Kesihatan Daerah Petaling. Thank goodness John is not showing any symptoms of HFMD. According to John, a few of his class friends got HFMD. I am also sure John doesn't mind the extra week of holiday. I hope the affected children would recover soon.

Kodak C653

The RRP for Kodak C653 is RM 499.00. So I have decided to get the new digicam for only RM390.00. While searching for my old receipts, I found out that I had actually paid RM 1550.00 for my old DX 4330. I bought the DX 4330 in 2003. I just realized the old digicam experienced the same problem in 2005. The repair cost was RM 491.00. There might be a pattern here. It appears the Kodaks that I bought can only last for 2 years. Let's see if C653 can function beyond 2009.

Lousy Dad

My wife has gone to Manila on a business trip. I must be a lousy dad. During her absence, she has arranged for John to stay over at his Ah Mah house and Matthew to sleep with the maid in the study room. I was left with Dan who incidentally threw up in the middle of the night. Dan didn't chew the mango properly and I guess his tummy decided to reject it. Matthew also cried half way through this sleep. He missed his mommy I suppose. Suzanne is back and life continues its normal course in this household.

Firefly has reached the skies

Talk about costs savings. Firefly's uniform is just a black t-shirt and brown pants. You can fly to Kota Baru, Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan and Langkawi (all twice daily) from Penang using Firefly as of today. Langkawi will only costs you RM 9 while the fare for the rest of the destionations are only RM 29. Koh Samui and Phuket will only cost RM 39 and this service will start on 13 April.

The Star printed this paragraph in its paper today, "These are the special introductory fares that passengers can enjoy on the new Firefly service. Operating from the Penang International Airport today, the airline is expected to give no-frills leader AirAsia competition in some areas."

Eh, I thought Firefly is supposed to cover destinations not covered by any other airlines at the moment. AirAsia flies to Bangkok, KK, JB, KL and Kuching out of Penang at the moment. Does this mean Firefly will also fly to any one of these locations as well? Only time will tell.

Prawn Mee - Restaurant Yon Lee

I wanted to try the prawn mee in Kg Cempaka as recommended by kyspeaks. However, before I got my chance, kyspeaks has found another good stall selling prawn mee in TTDI. To be honest, TTDI is more accessible compared to Kg Cempaka. Anyway, as mentioned by kyspeaks, this prawn mee is as authentic as any prawn mee in Penang. A definite place to go for all the prawn mee lovers in PJ. Looks like my top 3 best prawn mee shops list has changed:

Fatherhood

I had a tough day at work today. The client kept changing his mind and I had to keep revising the work. The work is yet to be approved by the end of business day today and it has to be implemented first thing tomorrow morning. I guess it will be touch and go during tomorrow's session then.

Anyway, the missus had a tiring day too. She went to sleep early. Dan wanted to poop in the toilet bowl. We are training him to use the toilet bowl now. Unfortunately, he has not fully grasp the concept of lifting up his shirt after pooping. So his shirt gets soiled sometimes. I took out his shirt and went to get a new one for him. Unfortunately, Dan decided to climb on the bed before I could clean him. As a result, I had to change the bed sheet, wash the bed sheet, bath Dan and changed him. After all this, I had to make milk for him. Must be hungry after that big business.

Finally, both John and Dan slept around midnight. Yes, both of them are still sleeping with the parents. Yes, both of them sleep late at night.

It is not easy to juggle work with family nowadays especially when both parents are working. I have to do my share of taking care of the children as well. Don't get me wrong. I actually look forward to wash my children's backsides every day. It is just that there is not enough time of the day which is why I am blogging at half past midnight. Well, tomorrow is another day. Good night.

Firefly is not Malaysia's second budget carrier. Firefly is actually Malaysia's first community airline. I hope Firefly is not a CSR exercise by MAS.

Yes, I was correct. www.firefly.com.my does not belong to FlyFireFly Sdn Bhd. The proper url is www.fireflyz.com.my. So cute. Adding the letter "z" is so Malaysian. I guess www.firefly.com.my was too expensive to buy out. Bookings can only be made through this web site in middle May. In the mean time, please use MAS 24 hours call centre to book your free ticket (only 2000 tickets available). Yes, Firefly is using MAS infrastructure until it is ready to stand on its own. You can also call 603-7845 4543.

Can you tell me if you notice any similarity between all three carriers' web sites?

Just in case, you think I am being critical of FireFly, I am not. I actually look forward to see Firefly take off on 2 April. We always like to see other people fight. As kids, whenever we see 2 children fight, the rest of them will encourage and even clap their hands. I don't know why. In this case here, while there is no direct war between Firefly and AirAsia but I do believe the Penangites will benefit in the long run. To borrow AirAsia's tagline, now every Penangite can fly.

No unhealthy war, the government says with the introduction of Firefly. I guess these new routes are not even profitable enough for AirAsia. Hopefully the Fokker planes can really lower the costs for Firefly to stay in this business for the long haul.

I still can't access www.firefly.com, www.firefly.com.my nor www.flyfirefly.com.my web sites at the moment. At least www.firefly.com.my in under construction although I got a bad feeling it is not meant for FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd. I could see a picture of a swamp at www.flyfirefly.com. It reminds me of the fireflies in Kuala Selangor. So I doubt it is owned by Firefly either.

Thanks to a comment left by yzerfontein, the name Firefly was meant to be "evocative, emotive and unique". Now I fail to see how Firefly is connected to "evocative, emotive and unique". Have you seen a firefly before? If not, you better visit Firefly Park Resort this weekend. Firefly shines at night to attract sexual partner. Can sexual advances be "evocative, emotive and unique"?

Anyway, let's not jump the gun and wait for their big announcement on the 17th March 2007.

Firefly, that is right. The name of the second no frills airline in Malaysia. Actually, I thought FAX was the second budget airline in Malaysia. Anyway, MAS owns Firefly to be operated out of Penang airport. Firefly will be using Fokker planes, servicing routes which are not operated by other airlines at the moment.

Finally, the government has allowed MAS to venture into this niche market. However, I feel MAS should have come up with a better brand name than Firefly. What is MAS trying to project Firefly? That it is a small fry in the budget airline market?

Firefly should be profitable from the word go since it will be using Fokker planes. Hopefully Firefly can fly further than South Thailand. I am sure the Penang people will benefit from it.

Go Firefly Go! Hopefully you can brighten the aviation industry even more.

Did you watch the All England badminton game on TV last night? Both Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong have appeared on the front page of The Star newspaper for their heroic efforts yesterday. They have ended our 25 years wait for a doubles badminton triumph at All England. Kudos to them. Praises should go to Rexy Mainaky too. We have broken 2 "records" since he took over as the doubles coach. The other "record" being the gold medalist at the recent Asian Games, a first in 36 years. Keep it up guys. The World Championship is just a few months away.

AirAsiaX postponed

For those who are planning to fly to Manchester using AirAsiaX in July this year would have to wait another year since AirAsiaX is unable to purchase any aircraft for this long haul route. AirAsiaX may have secured the Malaysia's government approval. How about the landing rights at Manchester? I am not an aviation industry expert but I thought securing the landing rights is more important than procuring aircraft at the moment. Don't get me wrong. I am not against AirAsiaX. I wouldn't mind paying only half price to fly to UK. I just hope it is not just a marketing hype.

Kodak Digicam

I have no idea what was wrong with my previous posting which went blank. I had to delete it before I could publish this posting. Anyway I am too lazy to rewrite it now. When I thought I was on the road to recovery, I have developed a serious sore throat. It hurts even when I swallow saliva. The wisdom tooth pain is subsiding. Hence I didn't see the dentist this morning. I was planning to see the doctor after work just now since my mild headache has returned during lunch time but it was closed. I have taken 2 Panadols. Let's see what happens tomorrow.

Sickly Chinese New Year

Only one post in February. Man, I am even disappointed in myself. Chinese New Year was bad for me this year. I have contracted a flu virus from the office and I started to fall ill on the day before the reunion dinner. I woke up on Friday morning with a fever and headache. Couldn't work on that Friday for sure.

We were originally planning to leave for Sungai Petani on Saturday morning. Since I couldn't drive all the way back, we have decided to depart on Friday midnight. The whole world decided to do the same thing. As a result, it took twice the normal time to reach Ipoh. Suzanne took over the driving from Sg Perak onwards. We finally reached Sungai Petani after 6 hours of journey.

My fever started to fade on Monday. So we made our annual pilgrimage to Penang on Monday afternoon. The children enjoyed the beach very much.

We went back to PJ on Tuesday morning and the traffic was no better. I resumed work on Thursday and Friday. Just when I thought I would completely recover from the flu, the fever came back on Sunday and I have been on medication again since. Tomorrow would mark the second week that I am having this flu bug in my system. I may need to see a third doctor if my condition doesn't improve by tomorrow.

Nesvita Soya Aloe Vera and Nesvita Soya Honey

I have finally tried both Nesvita Soya Aloe Vera and Nesvita Soya Honey. I must say I prefer Aloe Vera over Honey anytime. Honey tasted too "artificial" in my opinion. Maybe Honey doesn't mix too well with Soya Bean.

Nesvita Soya Aloe Vera tasted more "complete" compared to Honey. Aloe Vera is the best drink in its entire range. Hence I would rate Aloe Vera 4/5 while Honey is given the same score as Soya Bean Milk.

The first audible words that Matthew have spoken to me are "Gor Gor". Not too sure if he was referring to John or Dan. I suspect it is Dan since both of them grow up under one roof.

The best part of being the first born is you get to enjoy all the attention from your parents. The parents have to divide their attention once there is more than one child in the family. I was going through all the children videos and I realized that I have a few videos on John's crawling and walking. The videos are getting lesser and lesser for Dan and Matthew. Perhaps I better take a video of Matthew walking this weekend. Feeling a bit guilty.

As the name suggests, this product tasted sweeter. I actually liked this version compared to the normal product. So I will give it a higher score.

AirAsia Free Tickets

Did you managed to obtain your free tickets from AirAsia web site? Ever since AirAsia announced its annual tickets giveaway campaign, everyone is talking it. As matter of fact, 120,000 tickets were already booked by noon on the first day itself, 120,000 free AirAsia tickets snapped up. My colleagues were even making double bookings. I have just visited AirAsia web site. Looks like Bali, Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Macau and Siem Reap are fully booked. You can still obtain tickets for places like Medan, Padang, Palembang, Pekanbaru and Surabaya.

Only popular East Malaysia locations such as Kuching, Labuan, Sibu and Tawau are almost fully booked. You can still get your tickets for the other stops in West Malaysia. Wait a minute, isn't 2007 Visit Malaysia Year? Okay, VMY 2007 is targeted at foreign tourists but heck, I believe Malaysians should visit local tourist destinations as well to get a feeling of the infamous Malaysian hospitality which only crop up during such events.

Jaring Dial-up

I have been a Jaring dial-up user since 1995. My account was due for a renewal in October last year. Jaring has also emailed about their new dial-up packages around the same time which would take effect on 15 November. You can read more about it since it was mentioned by JeffOoi, Jaring screwing up personal dial-up users?

I have decided to terminate my Jaring account since I have to pay a monthly fee even though I am not using the dial-up services. I wanted to switch to TMNet dial-up but it also charges a monthly fee. I have always maintained a dial-up account for backup reason. After all, Streamyx is not necessarily stable all the time.

Anyway, I still have some money in my Jaring account. I have asked if I could get the refund of my balance. The answer was yes since my balance was more than RM10. The cheque has finally arrived today. It is not about the amount but I am glad I have received my refund after "such a short period of time".

AirAsia X (Part 2)

AirAsia X continues to receive well planned publicity in the newspapers since its launch on Friday. X is the key word now as highlighted by this article, X-citing deal for air travellers. So the new caption is, "Now, Everyone Can Fly Extra-Long" instead of my original guess of "Now, Everyone Can Really Fly". It will only cost RM9.99 to fly to Manchester. I am sure RM 9.99 tickets are limited and you will still have to pay for food and on-flight entertainment. Sir Richard Branson didn't attend the press conference. Instead, Datuk Tony Fernandes had to provide the entertainment to the guests, X-tra witty Fernandes has guests in stitches.

The government has also provided full support to AirAsia X. Both the Transport Minister and Tourism Minister officially launched AirAsia X, LCCT will be expanded to become global hub. MAB has only 6 months to complete the expansion for LCCT to cater for the wide body jets. This shouldn't pose any problem since LCCT was built in a record time in the first place.

Besides these articles that appeared in The Star on Saturday, The Star has also published an interview with Datuk Tony Fernandes on the same day, Going the distance and To hell and back See what I meant by a well organized publicity campaign for AirAsia X. I do not know much about the aviation industry but I still don't buy the idea of separating the 8 hours haul from the 4 hours haul. Yes, 8 hours haul will be managed by a totally different team and with a name extension but ultimately, they are operating with the same business model and cost here. Frankly speaking, I think Datuk Tony is trying to maximize his milking the cow by creating a separate entity. On other hand, if AirAsia X fails, it won't totally crash the mother ship. After all, there were successful no-frills airlines in the other continents before the creation of AirAsia. No-frills long haul flights have yet to be proven profitable and I am sure Datuk Tony aims to be the first in the world.

The big brother is unfazed by the launch of AirAsia X and instead welcomes competition in this sector, There’s enough for everyone, says MAS. Perhaps Datuk Tony is correct. MAS might actually be more profitable with competition breathing down its neck. Now wait a minute, if that is true, the government should break the monopoly in all the other industries. But alas, it is easier said than done. I think we don't mind a brother of the same origin to share the pie but I doubt we would do the same to foreigners.

AirAsia X

I have greeted the New Year 2007 by reading this article, Top low-cost airline bosses to form global network in The Star newspaper. Finally, Datuk Tony Fernandes has announced his long haul plans to Australia and Europe. What a way to start the new year. He is going to form an alliance with Sir Richard Branson and Sir Stelios Haji-loannou. This alliance will be based in LCCT. Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy must be smiling from ear to ear.

So now, everyone can really fly. It definitely got everyone excited. Various people ranging from Manchester United fans, frequent air travellers and tourism organizations can't wait for this alliance to take off, Thumbs-up for budget alliance.

As expected, AirAsia share price went up on BSKL. Now, wait a minute. Datuk Tony Fernandes is not going to form this alliance with AirAsia. He is going to use his private company, FAX instead, FAX gets rights to non-MAS long haul routes. I am not an expert in the aviation industry. Why would the government give the low cost long haul routes to a private company? Why would Datuk Tony Fernandes used FAX instead of AirAsia? I think he will list FAX on the stock exchange as well.

Anyway, Jeff Ooi has picked up this scoop with regards to the alliance, Did The Star big-bang itself on New Year's Day?. According to Reuters UK, both EasyJet and Virgin have denied talking to AirAsia on the alliance, EasyJet and Virgin deny AirAsia tie-up talks. So what is going on here?

Did Sir Richard Branson turned up during the press conference today? In the end, there was no mention of the long haul routes. Instead, FAX will fly the long haul routes using the name of AirAsia X, under franchise from AirAsia in July 2007, AirAsia X London flights from RM9.99. There is no response from MAS yet. I guess there is nothing to response to since the only thing that is certain is July 2007. I am not even sure if AirAsia X can meet this deadline based on AirAsia's track record. In the mean time, let's wait for further announcements on AirAsia X.

Kindergarten (Updated)

Something happened this morning which only occurred once to me last year. John wanted me to drop him off in front of the kindergarten today. Looks like John is really growing up now.

John has started his kindergarten class this week. Unlike the nursery class last year, there was no fuss this time around. Thanks to the mother who sent him to class during November. Suzanne was very strict with him while I actually allowed him to sleep all the way to nursery. Anyway, he was already awake in the car even before I reached the kindy yesterday. I brought him to Ikea playground as his reward. Then we stopped by at atti2de house to return her monitor on the way home. I believe Ian and John made friends for the first time. Ian showed his Xbox to John. We have been contemplating buying a console game for John. John always play VSmile at Jaya Jusco and Toys "R" Us. On the other hand, we want to delay his exposure to console game as later as possible. We do not want him to turn into a couch potato at such a young age. Let's see how long we can delay this inevitability.

Dan also wants to go to school when he found out John was going. Too bad I can't afford it. Anyway Dan is not ready to go to nursery yet. He is too young, not potty trained and he has not out-grown his CMPA. He will have to wait until 2008 then.

The journey to Sarikei took 1.5 hours one way. The road condition was better compared to Kota Belud, Sabah. However, the road was being widened and the drive was slower at certain stretches.

Sarikei is famous for Sarawak’s pineapples. Apparently, Sarawak’s sweet pineapples are sourced from Sarikei. Sarikei is definitely smaller than Sibu. I didn’t get to see much of Sarikei since my flight from Sibu to Kuching was scheduled at 4.20pm.

I have noticed one thing about my trip here to Sibu. During my flight from KL to Sibu, the passengers got up from their seats even before the plane was docked at the airport. Usually, there is some slight movement during docking. Either Sibu people don’t care about their safety or they have strong and stable feet.

During my flight from Sibu to Kuching, all the passengers were waiting right outside the boarding gate. Now the incoming flight has just touched down and I believed the ground crew was cleaning the aircraft. Once again, everyone was very excited and stood outside the boarding gate even though it was not ready. The TV monitor didn’t help the cause as it was already flashing last call even though it was only 4.00pm. One poor lady thought she was late and quickly rushed to the aircraft. The immigration staff had to call her back since the boarding gate was still closed.

This is the first time I have noticed such observations in my entire travel life. So are Foochow people kiasu?

By the way, I saw the new Kuching airport was designed like KLIA during my transit. Are they going to copy KLIA airport design for the rest of the airports in the country as well?

Own Domain

I have been wanting to get my own domain for quite some time now. However, I can't afford it since I need to channel all additional fund to buy infant formula for my children. Yes, getting my own domain has become a luxury to me. As such, I am planning to generate some side income via my blog to save enough money for my own domain. Well I also know I won't be generating tonnes of money since I only get one hit per day but it is a start. On the other hand, I feel like I am selling my soul to the devil. After all, it is supposed to be a personal blog. Yes, I am a complicated person. I like to analyze things until death. Hence, I have this dilemma hanging over my head now.

I am blogging from an Internet cafe in Sibu now. I had to wake up early to catch my flight at 8.30am today. It is not easier on me even though this is my second outstation trip. I left with a heavy heart while watching my children sleeping. My taxi driver couldn't wake up. Hence he has asked another driver to send me to the airport instead. The flight was slightly delayed due to the jam caused during boarding. KLIA was also packed with holiday makers. since it is the holiday season.

I went straight to work upon touchdown at Sibu airport. I have managed to finish my work earlier. Hence I am surfing the Internet now. Dinner is arranged at 7.00pm later. I will continue my work in Sarikei tomorrow before flying back to KL in the evening. Got to go. My time is up.

Windows XP

As much as people hates Bill Gates and Microsoft, I for one is thankful for Windows XP. I have managed to revive my old computer. Windows XP has recognized the monitor and network card unlike Windows ME. I can surf at home now. My Internet life is restored.

I still need to get a monitor and mouse. Dan has dunked the old track ball mouse into water. Nowadays, the new mouse is so small. Are they designed for children use? My hand was aching after using the small mouse yesterday.

I am also trying out Atti2de's old monitor. I am so used to 1024 resolution. This monitor flickers when I switched to 1024 resolution. Not too sure if I need to update the display driver or monitor driver.

Happy Feet

One Happy Feet to rule them all. This time, ~~Frodo~~ Mumble has to save the penguin world from starvation. Like Lord of the Rings, Mumble has to travel afar to convince humans to stop eating fish. Mumble had to swim across one or perhaps two oceans before he was "abducted" by the aliens. Once Mumble was captured in an aquarium, the rest of the plot was plain easy as the humans figured there is a link between Mumble's tap dancing and the reduction of food in the sea. Once again, Mumble saves the day and the old world order is restored.

Elijah Wood is the voice for Mumble. Robin Williams is the other interesting voice-over in this animation. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman were under-utilized as Mumble's parents. I didn't know Brittany Murphy could sing. Overall, Happy Feet is a nice movie to watch with your family.

Reviving an old computer

Ever since I have started work in my new company, I am unable to surf the Internet at home. My company notebook is totally locked down. Hence I am unable to install any software at all.

Out of desperation, I am trying to revive my sister's old computer. I have managed to install Windows ME after a couple of hiccups. I am not sure if there is something wrong with the hard disk or motherboard. Anyway, the computer seems to be stable after a few bootups.

I am trying to install the network card now but Windows ME does not recognize it. I do not know what is wrong now. Argh!

My guess was correct. As mentioned in my earlier "Makro on sale" posting, Tesco is the successful bidder for Makro outlets. You can read the announcement in the Business Times today. So another retailer is going to leave Malaysia's retail environment. Tesco is going to grow, not tremendously since there are duplication of outlets.

Kota Kinabalu

Like Tawau, I have arrived in Kota Kinabalu late at night on Tuesday. Unlike Tawau, the airport to the town centre is nearer. Unlike Marco Polo Tawau, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu is a very nice hotel. I went to 3 towns, Kota Belud, Tuaran and Inanam on Wednesday. Too bad I forgot to bring my camera. There is nothing much to describe about these 3 towns since I didn't spend much time in each location. I had a simple "chap fan" for lunch in Inanam since we were on a very tight schedule. My colleague and I were not adventurous in Kota Kinabalu. Maybe we were just tired from all the travelling. Hence we just went for a simple "tai chow" dinner in a nearby shopping complex.

Like Tawau, the weather in Kota Kinabalu is hot and humid. My colleague wanted to buy some frozen seafood. So we went for some shopping before our flight back to KL in the evening. I will try to remember my camera for my trip to Sarawak next month.

I have read 3 interesting articles in The Star newspaper yesterday. I have always found Hishamuddin Rais' articles in The Edge magazine to be interesting. I didn't realize he was considered as Malaysia's Che Guevara in the 1970s until yesterday. As usual, it is always nice to put a face to a name. Does Jeff Ooi represent the face of Malaysian bloggers? Does the name Jeff Ooi comes to the top of your mind when you are asked to name the # 1 blogger in Malaysia? So Jeff Ooi has become so influential that DAP is planning to recruit him to as a political candidate for the next general election. Imagine that!

Similarly, does Xiaxue represent the face of Singaporean bloggers then? The Star newspaper used her photo in this article. The Internet medium is becoming more prevalent and the people's voice is becoming louder through this blogging channel.

Tawau

I had to travel to Tawau on a business trip last Monday. I took the Malaysia Airlines and I had a stopover at Kota Kinabalu airport. All the direct flights are operated by Air Asia now but Air Asia requires full payment upon booking via credit card. This is not conducive for corporate flight booking. Anyway, the MAS flight was delayed by 2 hours. I could only touched down in Tawau at 11pm instead of 9pm. What a pain!

The weather in Tawau was hot and humid. I stayed at Marco Polo hotel. Apparently, it is the best hotel in Tawau. We have finished our assignment in Tawau earlier than expected on Tuesday. My colleague and I have decided to fly back to Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday night instead of spending one more night in Tawau. The last flight out was at 9.15pm. So we had a simple seafood dinner at Kam Ling Seafood Restaurant in Sabindo. Apparently this Sabindo hawker centre is a compulsory place to eat when you travel to Tawau.

I could not describe much about Tawau since I only spent one day in this town. There are a lot of Indonesians in Tawau since this town is located near to the Indonesia border. I will talk about my short trip to Kota Kinabalu next.

Yes, I haven't blog for almost 1 month. I was working right until the very last minute in my previous company. Life has been very hectic since I have started work in my new company. I had briefings arranged during the first 2 weeks. On top of that, I had to start work immediately after the handover on the first day. I am still finding my way in this new job. I had to travel to Kota Kinabalu and Tawau last week. I have not travel on business trip for a very long time. I had difficulty adjusting during the Sabah trip. I need to travel to Sarawak next month. Needless to say, I am not looking forward to it. Hopefully I can shorten the trip to just one night in Sarawak depending on my destination. I will blog more later.

Am I a bad parent if I have answered yes to all 3 questions? Am I considered a good parent if I have answered no instead? I remember my parents were very strict to me when I was growing up. Looking back, I must admit I wasn't easy to manage in the first place. But then again, I was just being a kid. A kid doesn't have to worry about consequences. I just wanted my way in everything. Now how does a parent manage such a kid? Now you can prepare for the arrival of your baby by reading books. However, no books can teach you how to reason with your kids. I told myself I would be a nice parent before John was born. I didn't want John to experience the same childhood as mine. But I realized this is nearly impossible now. It is time to put my feet down and no more mr. nice guy. In doing so, I have become like my parents.

So, what is my best inspiration for being a good parent? My very own childhood.

Nesvita Soya Bean Milk tasted very light with just the right amount of sweetness. Due to the nature of the product, I could hardly taste the soya bean. I still prefer the fresh soya bean drink. It has more volume and it tastes natural.

I doubt it is coincidental. Soyrich has also relaunched its soya bean drink. Soyrich is made from the finest quality of non-GMO (non-genetically modified) Canadian soy beans. Like Nesvita, Soyrich is also cholesterol free, lactose free, low in fat and preservative free. However, Soyrich's taste is slightly better compared with Nesvita. Don't get me wrong. It is still quite light compared to the fresh soya bean drink. Nothing can beat the original product I guess.

West Coast Eagles

It was a very sweet victory for the Eagles over the Swans in AFL Grand Final 2006. Once again, the victory margin was razor thin, 1 behind to be exact. The Eagles kicked 5 behinds in the second quarter. I was worried it may haunt my favourite AFL team later. The Eagles started out strong by dominating the first half. The games swinged to the Swans' favour in the second half where they played a good game of catching up.

However, the Eagles were not to be denied. They avenged their last year's Grand Final defeat by holding on to their slim 1 point lead. I am particularly happy since their previous premiership was won back in 1994, the same year I left Perth. It has been a good 12 years since then. Hopefully I can obtain the AFL 2006 Premiership t-shirt soon. Good on you, Eagles!

Jaring or Tmnet Dialup

My 10 years old Jaring dialup is due to renewal. When I tried to renew my account, I saw an announcement that all the old dialup accounts must be converted to the new dialup packages by 15th November 2006. This is where the dilemma starts. I need to pay a monthly subscription fee of RM 5 to enjoy 600 minutes of dialup usage. I prefer the old system where I don't have to pay a monthly fee. I am only charged when I use the dialup.

I have also checked Tmnet's 1515 packages. It is similar to Jaring's new package where there is a monthly fee of RM 10 for 1200 minutes. So much for product differentiation and unique selling proposition.

I have booked a room at Hotel Langkasuka, Langkawi during the Raya week. However, I am not really convinced my booking is confirmed because Ms. Jothi asked me to call back two weeks later. Since two other hotels are fully booked during the same week, I got a feeling the whole island will be swarmed with people. Thanks to the lack of assurance by Hotel Langkasuka, I have decided to visit the Pearl of the Orient instead. Since I am more familiar with Penang, it was easier to decide on the accommodation. We will still fly to Penang and the entire trip should be more affordable compared to Langkawi. Unlike Langkawi, there is no Underwater World or cable car in Penang. What are the children going to do in Penang besides frolicking in the beach?

I am planning to visit Langkawi for a holiday before I start work in my new company. The Raya week seems like the best timing at the moment although it means I need to pay a surcharge for peak period. We have not gone for a holiday since the birth of Dan. We will be flying to Langkawi with the children for the first time. I am sure John will be excited. Dan and Matthew may be too young to know the understand the significance.

Now, planning a holiday for the entire family is a totally new experience for me. It was easy to book holidays for 2 adults. We could stay in any decent hotel but I am worried that any decent hotel may not be good enough for the children. On the other hand, our budget is tight and hence we can forget any hotels that are rated 4 stars and above. I have surfed two web sites, MyLangkawi and Langkawi Resorts. I found Langkawi Resorts web site to be more useful. I have narrowed down my hotel selection to Langkasuka Beach Resort. However, I am a bit hesitant after reading the following feedback on this hotel. I may not have any other choice since this hotel seems like the most decent hotel at the moment.

My colleague has suggested Hotel Helang which offers the same package as Langkasuka Beach Resort. Apparently, both hotels are sister hotels. Hotel Helang doesn't have a beach but you can use Langkasuka's beach since they are related. Hotel Helang seems more promising after I have checked the feedback. Unfortunately, this hotel is fully booked during the Raya week. It seems that the entire island will be packed during the Raya week. Perhaps I should change our holiday destination.

Medical Checkup

I went for a medical checkup a few weeks ago. First, I had to donate some urine in a empty Brands Chicken Essence bottle. I hope the masking drug will do its job in hiding the performance enhancing drug. Now what a minute. How am I going to conceal the masking drug? Hmmm.....

Anyway, I was required to check my height and weight which was followed by the eye test. I find the eye test ironic since I am wearing spectacles. Of course, I can read the alphabets with my glasses and can't without it. Next, I had to fill a form that basically claimed that I have no diseases what so ever.

The chest x-ray proceeded without much fuss. The doctor examination was the final item on the card. The doctor checked all the vital organs. Now the highlight of the day was when he carried out the incontinence test. I had to strip down my underwear and coughed 4 times. Of course he checked to ensure I didn't leak during the coughing. Then he cupped my balls. I went berserk. What the heck? Why did you touch my balls? No answer was forthcoming because I didn't go berserk. I just made that part up. However, I was surprised the doctor touched the cherries because the previous female doctor kept her hands to herself during my earlier checkup. Honestly, I am still dumbfounded about this incontinence test until now. It is not like I will wet my computer keyboard when I work in the office right...

Dr. House is back, running and smiling too. I haven’t seen him smile for a very long time. As matter of fact, has he ever smiled on this show? So he applied the ketamine induced coma treatment in between Season 2 and Season 3. Dr House even tried to ask Dr Cameron for a date again. The pain is not totally gone from his leg. The pain reappeared when he was skate-boarding. Has Dr House changed due to the surgery and the hallucination? Has he become a nice person and a friendlier doctor? We just have to wait and see.

Floored

I have not taken medical leave for a very long time. However, my conjunctivitis is showing no signs of retreating and I need to take antibiotics due to a swollen throat. Hence the doctor has given me 2 days of medical leave. I got the flu and fever too. So I am sweating and shivering at the same time. The doctor also asked me to consume a lot of fluids even though my throat hurts when swallowing saliva. Most importantly, I need to stay at home in order to prevent an epidemic of red-eye monsters.

Here we are, trying to become responsible parents by grounding our children who were sick. And yet, there are other parents who do not share the same thinking. The red eye epidemic started in my family when Dan contracted it from another child. Soon it spread to Matthew, the maid and now me. All 4 of us were grounded and stayed at home. If that child had stayed at home, I believe none of us would have contracted conjunctivitis in the first place. Do other parents appreciate it? Yes, I am frustrated because it is very disheartening to see my children fall sick. Hopefully the conjunctivitis won't spread to Suzanne and John. Shucks! Now my right eye is twitching.

Resignation

I have done something which I have never for a long time. 4.5 years to be exact. Yes, I have tendered my resignation today. This is the longest stint I ever had with any company. I usually do not last 3 years in my previous working experiences. So this is definitely an achievement for me. I waited for the right time before seeing my boss to hand over the letter. I got to admit I was pretty nervous about the entire process. I was afraid my boss would give me a long lecture. Probably she was expecting it because the lecture was nowhere to be seen. Anyway I am glad that was over. I still have one more hurdle to cross, my director. Hopefully he doesn't want to see me at all.

Conjunctivitis (Updated)

Dan has contracted conjunctivitis from the church nursery. The locals called it the red eye while the gwailos called it the pink eye. He also caught the flu and fever bugs from his baby brother, Matthew. Poor kid. He was grounded for one week in order to prevent transmission to other people. As usual, he loses all his appetite and his weight drops every time he falls ill. Thank goodness, he has fully recovered today. The only problem is baby Matthew may still contract this conjunctivitis since our maid has the red eye now.

Makro on Sale

Makro Cash & Carry is leaving Malaysia. All the shareholders which are SHV Holdings NV (65%), PKNS (20.7%) and PKNS-LFD (14.3%) are selling their stakes in Makro. Makro has 8 stores in Malaysia at the moment. This piece of news came as a surprise to me. After all, Makro has just announced refurbishment plans for their existing stores and expansion plans of 7 new stores within the next 3 years. Will Metro or Walmart penetrate the Malaysian market by taking over Makro Cash & Carry? I doubt it since I believe this market is too small for either Metro or Walmart. I believe that Tesco is the most likely retailer to buy up Makro. Tesco's initial expansion has been hampered by the guidelines set by the Ministry. I also doubt a new foreign player will enter this market until the new guidelines are released. Tesco can also boost its presence in Cheras, JB, Seberang Perai and Seremban, areas in which Tesco is not available at the moment. Let's wait and see since the sale is expected to be completed by year end.

The victory was never in doubt. I have only managed to watch the last 30 minutes of the game between Australia and New Zealand. I couldn't believe the score of my television. Australia was leading New Zealand by 20-14. How did it happened? I was expecting the match to be close, not Australia in front of the New Zealand. The All Black soon showed why they are the hottest team in the Southern Hemisphere at the moment and the red hot favourites for next year's World Cup. The All Blacks took over the lead by scoring 2 tries, 2 conversions and 2 penalties. The Wallabies didn't back down and fought back with a try by Lote Tuqiri. The Wallabies also went deep into the All Black's territory twice but conceded turnovers on both occasions. The Australia proved they could play good rugby and matched the All Blacks in this game. The are just not good enough to beat New Zealand as indicated by the final score.

I saw these two new products by Milo in a Carrefour leaflet recently. I went to Giant last Wednesday planning to buy Milo Fuze Mocha but I couldn't find the product anywhere. Twisties Tandoori Chicken

There is a new Twisties in town. Actually there are two new Twisties on the shelf. Today, I will share my experience on Twisties Tandoori Chicken. Both Twisties Tandoori Chicken and Twisties Salmon Teriyaki are made from imported corn. The packaging doesn't say where the corn is sourced from. Anyway, I couldn't tell the taste of Twisties Tandoori Chicken. Is it supposed to be sweet? Spicy? I couldn't taste neither. Twisties Tandoori Chicken tasted like the normal Twisties. It is just the flavour that I couldn't pin it down. I will try Twisties Salmon Teriyaki next.

Near Miss

I was driving out of my condo this morning. Two big boys who were riding a motorcycle left at the same time. They decided to swerve to the right hand of the road but they continued on a snail pace. I couldn't overtake them because there were cars parked on the left hand side of the road. About one hundred metre later, the motorcyclist decided to cut left out of the sudden causing me to swerve left and stopped on the stop. Luckily there was no cars parked on the left or behind him. The motorcyclist had the cut left immediately because he had spotted a policeman issuing tickets for unlawful parking. His pillion rider was not wearing a helmet you see. Thank goodness I was not sleepy this morning. If not, there will be another dent in front of my car to complement the existing crack in my car's rear bumper.

Nestle Drumstick with Kit Kat Ice Cream

I came across this newspaper article where Nestle has launched a new ice cream called Nestle Drumstick with Kit Kat. The ice cream combines the best of both worlds, Nestle Drumstick and Kit Kat. This combination sounds very interesting. After all, it is not very difficult to put a Kit Kat inside an ice cream.

I sent my car for a wash at the Petronas petrol station after work yesterday. I was hoping to buy this new innovation at the petrol mart. I was expecting to be disappointed since it takes time for the product to reach the shelves after launch. To my pleasant surprise, the ice cream freezer was almost running out of stocks. There were only 3 sticks left in the freezer.

As the name suggested, this ice cream tasted like a drumstick with a Kit Kat lodged in the middle of the stick. If you want to eat an ice cream and Kit Kat at the same time, this is the product for you. Unfortunately, I couldn't take a picture since I don't own a camera phone. The only part I didn't like about this ice cream is the frozen Kit Kat. The Kit Kat didn't taste like a wafer in this ice cream. I always prefer my Kit Kat to be wafer like. Overall, I would give an average score to this new product for its innovation.

Is Floyd Landis a cheat?

As expected, the test for Floyd Landis Sample B is negative and is consistent with the result of the first test. He has been dismissed by his team Phonak. He is expected to lose his title as Le Tour de France 2006 champion and face a possible 2 year ban from cycling. I am not too sure if he can prove his innocence. I guess I am sad with this outcome. Ironically, I am reminded of Tyler Hamilton who is undergoing a 2 year ban for blood doping. Tyler Hamilton was also cycling for Phonak before he was found guilty for his offence. Overall, it is a very disappointing time for the cycling world right now.

On a separate note, I came across another disappointing article where the Sports Ministry have decided to bail out First Cartel Sdn Bhd, the organizers of Le Tour de Langkawi. Le Tour de Langkawi, one of the only 2 premier road races in Asia was the brainchild of Tun Dr. Mahathir. I try to follow the race every year through newspaper and television. I am very proud that we have a premier road race outside of Europe besides Tour of Qinghai Lake in China. I am always tickled by Hasbullah Awang's commentary especially when he pronounced the name of the European teams and cyclists.

The bailout package is worth RM 2.3 million. It appears that the entire damage may be more than RM 2.3 million. In any case, First Cartel Sdn Bhd has been dropped as the organizer. What has gone wrong? Malaysia has gained a reputation for organizing sporting events. Is this caused by First Cartel incompetence? Once again, we will never know the real answer. I just hope Le Tour de Langkawi will not disappear after 11 years since its inception.

Tri Nations 2006 - South Africa vs. Australia (Updated)

The Wallabies had to struggle to defeat the Springboks in their latest encounter. The final score indicated that the match was more evenly matched compared to the first match. I guess a win is a win. It doesn't have to be pretty.

Astro is showing this match live tomorrow at 6pm. I will not be watching the game since I will be at church. The momentum for Tri Nations is building. Astro is advertising this live screening a few days in advance. This is definitely an improvement. I remember I couldn't find any information on Tri Nations for the first few matches.

The game should end in the Wallabies favour. I don't see how the Springboks can triumph over the Wallabies, at least not on Australian soil anyway. So go Aussie go!

Before he could even reach home to celebrate his triumph at Le Tour with his family, Floyd Landis has failed a doping test. He has been found with high testosterone level at the end of Stage 17. Everyone is waiting for the results of the test on his second sample. Floyd claimed his high testosterone level was created naturally by his body. The irony is he was tested 6 other times during the tour and yet he was only found guilty after he was won Le Tour. Everyone wants a real answer. I doubt we will get any.

Tri Nations 2006 - New Zealand vs. Australia

This match was actually shown live on Astro Channel 80 on Saturday at 6.00pm. Unfortunately, I couldn't watch the entire match because it coincided with my dinner. There was no surprise with the final result. Yes, the score was closer than the first match in Christchurch. I am not too sure if the Wallabies has improved their game but the All Black looks invincible at the moment.

Man, I can't even surf www.sitemeter.com. Now I am contemplating to migrate my blog to www.wordpress.com. It may take some time to migrate all my previous postings. Secondly, there is no guarantee that my company will allow access to wordpress in the future. Such dilemma.

New Drinks - Pepsi Gold, Seasons Red Bean Soya, ShiZen Green Tea and Yeos Isotea

Pepsi Gold

Pepsi has reintroduced Pepsi Gold for the recently concluded World Cup 2006. Pepsi has also launched a gold coin contest in conjuction with this Pepsi Gold launch. I have decided to give this new flavour a try since I didn't dare during the previous launch. In all honesty, I couldn't taste this new flavour. Not too sure if my tongue is deformed but Pepsi Gold tasted like a normal Pepsi Cola. I surfed Pepsi Malaysia web site hoping to find out more information about Pepsi Gold but I was disappointed. So the only special attribute about Pepsi Gold is its unique golden hue.

Seasons Red Bean Soya

Unlike Pepsi Gold, there wasn't any event to mark the launch of this new Red Bean flavoured Soya Bean drink by F&N Seasons. However, Seasons Red Bean Soya shares a similarity with Pepsi Gold. There are no details about this new drink on its web site either. I wasn't sure which flavour was stronger at first. I couldn't differentiate whether it was a soya bean with red bean drink or red bean with soya drink. I began to appreciate the drink after a few more sips. I really liked the combination of both the soya bean and red bean flavours. There is a little surprise for you towards the end of the drink. So make sure you really finish the can to find out the surprise.

Shizen Green Tea

Personally, I only consume green tea with japanese food. I prefer my green tea to be cold rather than hot. So I never really understood the concept of drinking green tea in a can. I believe Yeos started this innovation in this country and Coca Cola has joined the bandwagon with the introduction of Shizen Green Tea. Shizen comes in 2 flavours, Jasmine and Calamansi Lime. I never caught on the trend of drinking green tea outside a japanese restaurant. Hence there is nothing special about Shizen. I am giving a below average rating for Shizen simply because of my personal preference rather than the taste of the drink itself. Overall, Shizen tasted okay.

Yeos Isotea

In line with the health benefits of green tea, Yeos has launched a new Isotonic drink called Isotea. Isotea marks Yeo's penetration into the Isotonic drink segment. Yeos is probably the first company to introduce ready to drink green tea in Malaysia. Now, Yeos has managed to combine the green tea extract with Isotonic. Isotea tasted like any ordinary Isotonic drink. I couldn't really taste the green tea. Compared to the other Isotonic drinks, the green tea extract has given a slightly sweeter taste to Isotea.

Le Tour de France 2006 (Final Stage)

As expected, Floyd Landis is the winner of this year Le Tour de France. Thor Hushovd has claimed the final stage at Champs-Elysees. This year race is probably the most interesting one since the retirement of Lance Armstrong. 7 riders wore the yellow jersey during the entire race, just one short of equaling the record number of yellow jersey holders. I thought Floyd Landis was going to win this year's tour until the slight setback on Stage 16. He staged a remarkable comeback to win Stage 17 and put himself back into contention for the yellow jersey. He rode a cool and calm race to finish ahead of Oscar Pereiro during Stage 19 time trial. The yellow jersey will remain in the United States for another year.

Tri Nations 2006 - South Africa vs. New Zealand

I don't know why Astro is not broadcasting the Tri Nations Cup live this year. So I had to rely on the Internet to follow the Tri Nations. There are no surprises with the final result. As expected, New Zealand has defeated South Africa by 35-17. South Africa played better than the last week drubbing by Australia but there is no stopping the in-form team at the moment.

Let's see how Australia will perform against the All Blacks next weekend.
